A native of Los Angeles, in 1992 Mr. Cope graduated cum laude from the J. Reuben Clark School of Law at Brigham Young University, where he was a member of both the BYU Law Review and BYU Journal of Public Law. He ranked top in his class in Criminal Law, and likewise earned the highest grade rankings in Advanced Legal Research, Advanced Comparative Constitutional Law, Jewish Law, and Law in Film. Mr. Cope also holds a B. A. degree in Philosophy from BYU (1989), where he was one of only fourteen recipients (from a graduating class of some 4,400 students) of a University Honors Degree, BYU's highest graduating distinction.

Mr. Cope has been admitted to practice law in three states: California, Colorado, and Utah, and is also admitted to federal practice in California. He began his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney for Contra Costa County, where he was mentored by outstanding professionals, including McGregor Scott, who became Shasta County's District Attorney, and later the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California. After private criminal defense and corporations practice in Southern California, Mr. Cope began his local career as a Shasta County Prosecutor under Mr. Scott in 2001, serving for several years as a Deputy District Attorney with Shasta County. He later served over four years with Berg and Associates in Redding, California, before moving into his own practice in 2012.

Mr. Cope has conducted numerous serious and violent felony "strike" trials, and homicide prosecutions. Additional criminal trials and defense proceedings include alleged DUI cases, sex crimes, financial crimes, fraud, domestic violence, robbery, residential burglary, battery, weapons crimes, and attempted murder. As a Senior Associate at Wehner and Perlman, LLP in Los Angeles, (1997-1999), he practiced white-collar criminal defense and specialized in defending Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigations. In his private practice, he has defended a wide array of alleged serious and violent felonies, DUI charges, embezzlement, theft and drug crimes.  Finally, he has cultivated unique strategies for serving California's cannabis industry, providing legal solutions for his clients' increasingly complex business needs, as well as routinely defending cannabis-related felony charges.

Mr. Cope brings to Northern California a wealth of talent, experience, courtroom skill, trial practice and advanced negotiation strategy. He is seriously committed to justice and the well-being of every client who retains him. He is here to serve you.
